Experience
I have a California Single Subject teaching credential in general science and biology. I am drawn to tutoring because I value building relationships and working one on one with students to address their unique needs and goals. Sometimes students feel they are not "smart" at math or science because they struggle to grasp new concepts or have failed in the past. I find math and science tutoring especially rewarding since it provides opportunities to help students who are struggling work through difficulties and reach their eureka moments. I believe in fostering a growth mindset - this means learning from mistakes and focusing on process and effort. Learners who approach difficult problems with a growth mindset have been shown to persist longer and achieve higher. I have also tutored UC Santa Cruz students in writing, and enjoy helping people clarify their ideas and express them in academic language. I feel privileged to see writing in it's early stages, and to help writers find the core of their argument and reach their audience.
